Brussels: The European Ocean Board, a newly established high-level expert group, gathered today for its inaugural meeting in Brussels to advance the European Ocean Pact's comprehensive strategy for the ocean. Chaired by Costas Kadis, Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, the Board comprises 28 leading experts from various sectors across Europe, including trade and business associations, academia, research institutes, non-governmental organisations, and youth organisations. Their collective mission is to provide strategic guidance on implementing the Ocean Pact's goals, which encompass ocean health, blue economy competitiveness, coastal resilience, scientific research, maritime security, and global ocean governance.
According to Cyprus News Agency, today's session focused on exchanging views, identifying strategic priorities, and shaping the Board's future work programme, laying the groundwork for its long-term impact. The selection of the 28 Board members followed an open call for applications, ensuring that diverse perspectives are represented. This varied expertise enables informed and inclusive policy development based on practical experience. The Board aims to work alongside existing platforms, including the Fisheries Advisory Councils and the European Blue Forum, reinforcing a coordinated, multi-stakeholder approach to ocean management.
The experts' diverse backgrounds are expected to contribute significantly to the Board's mission, ensuring that a wide range of perspectives are integrated into the policy-making process. This approach is designed to enhance the Board's ability to develop informed and effective strategies for ocean management across the European Union.
