European Integration Hinges on Ending Turkish Occupation of Cyprus, President Tells MEPs

Strasbourg: European integration cannot be achieved without the end of the Turkish occupation of Cyprus, the liberation, and the reunification of the island, President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, emphasized during his follow-up remarks before the European Parliament. He outlined the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides addressed several issues, including the Cyprus issue, migration, Schengen, EU enlargement, the Middle East, transparency, and the Multiannual Financial Framework. He stated that European integration requires the termination of the Turkish occupation and the reunification of Cyprus based on relevant UN resolutions. This solution should align with the legislation, principles, and values of the EU.

The President highlighted that Cyprus will continue to be an EU member state post-solution and welcomed the appointment of a representative by the President of the Commission regarding the Cyprus issue. He pointed out that Cyprus, as an EU member since 2004, has been divided since 1974 by Turkish troops occupying 37% of its territory.

On immigration, President Christodoulides mentioned that arrivals in Cyprus have decreased by over 80%, and returns have increased by over 60%. The Cyprus Presidency aims to ensure unity among member states and support the implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum.

Regarding the Schengen Area, he stated that it is a strategic goal for Cyprus, noting that all technical checks have been completed, and compliance has been achieved in all areas pending the Commission's final report.

On EU enlargement, the President warned of losing a "great geopolitical tool" if the EU is not ready to respond when candidate countries meet their obligations. He emphasized that Cyprus' presidency brings its own agenda, including strengthening EU relations with the Middle East.

Addressing transparency, President Christodoulides expressed pride in Cyprus' achievements in reducing corruption, citing reports from Moneyval and Greco. He noted that Cyprus' economy is growing, with unemployment below 5% and public debt around 50%.

The President also stressed the importance of the Multiannual Financial Framework reflecting current needs and priorities. He invited MEPs to attend meetings in Cyprus, recognizing the European Parliament's significant role.

European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, praised the Cypriot Presidency's clear agenda and assured continued cooperation with the Presidency, EP, and member states to achieve results. He expressed confidence in President Christodoulides' leadership, stating, "Europe is counting on you."
