Brussels: The European Commission has initiated a £1.1 billion call for proposals aimed at building and modernising transport infrastructure across the EU's trans-European transport network (TEN-T). This marks the final call under the current European long-term budget for 2021-2027. The projects selected will contribute to major transport initiatives, including the EU's high-speed rail plan, the Industrial Action Plan for the European automotive sector, and enhancing maritime connectivity. Additionally, the funding will address military mobility bottlenecks and support the EU's military mobility package.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the call prioritises rail, the decarbonisation of maritime transport, and military mobility. It also supports the electrification of road haulage and airport ground operations, the deployment of charging infrastructure in ports, and the digitalisation of road transport. The inclusion of Ukraine and Moldova under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) underscores their growing transport links with the EU.
The CEF is the EU's leading instrument for funding and implementing the TEN-T policy. Projects selected under the 2026 call are expected to deliver smarter, more efficient, and sustainable transport infrastructure, improve interoperability, and bolster the resilience of transport networks across the EU. The deadline for applications is set for October 6, 2026, with more information available online.
