EU Sanctions on Syria Monitored Effectively, Cyprus FM States

Brussels: As far as Cyprus is concerned there is a mechanism in place to monitor developments in Syria, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos pointed out upon his arrival to the Foreign Affairs Council taking place in Brussels on Monday, commenting on the Council’s expected decision to suspend economic sanctions that had been imposed on the Assad regime by the EU in the past.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Kombos said that the discussions during the FAC would focus on Ukraine and on the Middle East. Regarding Ukraine, the Foreign Minister stated that the country has shown ‘genuine willingness’ to engage in ceasefire negotiations, which unfortunately has not been reciprocated by the other side. In the context of the Gaza Strip, Kombos highlighted the necessity to support ceasefire talks and the release of hostages, along with scaling up humanitarian aid.

Kombos emphasized that Cyprus’ stance on Syria has been consistent with a ‘more for more’ policy, linking expectations from Syria and the EU to the lifting and suspension of sanctions, supported by an effective monitoring mechanism. He assured that as long as good neighborly relations are maintained, Cyprus will stand with the Syrian people.

When questioned about whether Cyprus’ concerns have been addressed, Kombos expressed confidence in the mechanism now in place, indicating that the EU is progressing in the right direction. He noted the conditionality inherent in the framework and the ongoing dialogue with the Syrian side at the bilateral level.

Regarding Ukraine, Kombos commended Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate a ceasefire, though it has not been met with the same intent by the opposing side. He views the ceasefire as a foundation for substantial negotiations towards a peaceful resolution within the EU’s framework.

On the Middle East, Kombos addressed the critical negotiations concerning a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza. He underscored the importance of supporting these efforts and ensuring an increased flow of humanitarian aid into the region.

Commenting on the EU funding mechanism for the defense industry (SAFE), discussed by Defence Ministers earlier on Tuesday, Kombos highlighted the need to enhance the EU’s defense capacity and autonomy while considering the specific concerns of each member state.
