Brussels: EU Energy Council ministers reached a partial agreement on the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) during a meeting held in Brussels, focusing on the 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). The agenda included discussions on the European Commission's recent package on electricity grids and the intersection of energy and security.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus Minister Michalis Damianos outlined the priorities for the upcoming Cyprus EU Presidency. Danish Minister Lars Aagaard provided guidance on managing legislative files and cooperating with EU institutions. The ministers agreed on CEF, which provides a legal basis for investments in transport and energy infrastructure, including cross-border renewable projects.
Minister Damianos emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of island Member States and improving energy market integration. He called for a framework considering the unique characteristics of each region. The council also debated the European electricity grids package, aimed at modernizing grids to support electrification and provide secure, clean energy.
The Minister highlighted the need for completing the internal electricity market and promoting interconnection projects. He stressed timely project implementation to achieve EU objectives on energy prices and competitiveness. He added that the European Energy Union involves a shared commitment for all Member States to participate equally in the energy transition.
The ministers also discussed energy security with NATO Deputy Secretary General, Radmila Shekerinska. Minister Damianos highlighted EU-NATO cooperation's importance in addressing infrastructure protection and energy resilience. He advocated for a coordinated approach to strengthen Europe's energy resilience.
At the meeting's conclusion, Minister Damianos presented the Cypriot Presidency's energy program, focusing on a connected and secure Energy Union. He stressed providing affordable energy while supporting a clean transition.
