Brussels: The European Commission has announced a significant investment of £1 billion in joint defence research and development as part of the 2026 European Defence Fund (EDF) Work Programme. This initiative is designed to enhance Europe's collective approach to defence innovation and capability building. Since its inception in 2021, the EDF has supported 224 projects with approximately £4 billion, fostering cooperation among EU Member States and advancing shared defence technologies.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Commissioner for Defence and Space, Andrius Kubilius, emphasized the importance of collaboration in defence, stating, "Europe must strengthen collaboration in defence, with the European Defence Fund acting as a key foundation for this effort." The 2026 programme will fund 31 collaborative research and development topics in key priority areas, covering core defence capabilities, future technologies, and defence innovation. It also aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises and mid-caps.
The programme aligns with the European Defence Industrial Strategy and introduces measures to expedite innovation cycles, particularly for disruptive technologies. This investment underscores the EU's commitment to turning shared priorities into shared capabilities, reinforcing the bloc's strategic autonomy in defence.
