EU-funded Upgrade to Wastewater Treatment Facility in Famagusta

Famagusta: The European Union is investing in a significant upgrade to the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Turkish-occupied Famagusta. This project, implemented by UNDP through the Local Infrastructure Facility (LIF), is part of the EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the European Commission announced on Tuesday that the project involves an investment of EUR 832,000. The aim is to restore the plant to full operational efficiency, thereby enhancing essential services for the local community. Originally built in 2013 with EU financial support, the Famagusta WWTP is crucial to the region’s sanitation system. The refurbishment will upgrade treatment components and renew important instruments, ensuring reliable wastewater services, while also contributing to environmental protection and public health.

A contract signing ceremony took place on Tuesday, marking a key milestone in the project’s implementation. This reflects the strong collaboration between the European Union, UNDP, and local stakeholders. Installation of the new equipment is set to begin in November 2025 and is expected to be completed by March 2026.

The project aims to strengthen vital infrastructure and improve service delivery, supporting a more resilient and sustainable future for Famagusta. It also contributes to broader efforts toward environmental protection and sustainable development across Cyprus.
