EU Beach Cleanup Campaign Kicks Off in Limassol with Commissioner Kadis Participating

Limassol: The #EUBeachCleanup campaign was launched in Limassol, featuring the participation of Commissioner Kadis, following the European Maritime Day 2026. This event, hosted in Limassol, gathered around one thousand individuals from across Europe to discuss the present and future of marine environments. Commissioner Kadis emphasized that the cleanup of the Limassol Molos area is a 'meaningful and symbolic initiative' following the productive discussions of the past days.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Commissioner Kadis highlighted the severe threat pollution poses to the marine environment. He particularly pointed out the Mediterranean Sea, where an estimated 730 tonnes of plastic waste are deposited daily. This pollution not only harms the marine ecosystem but eventually impacts humans through the food chain. Kadis stated that initiatives like the cleanup aim to raise public awareness alongside addressing the pollution issue.

Commissioner Kadis expressed confidence in the efforts, appreciating the support from the Municipality of Limassol and volunteers, marking the event as a promising start. Limassol's Mayor, Yiannis Armeftis, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing environmental awareness and the collective responsibility to protect seas and coastlines. He acknowledged the sea's integral role in identity and history, stressing the importance of safeguarding it from pollution and marine litter, which are among the significant environmental challenges faced today.
