EU Allocates £63 Million to Combat Humanitarian Crisis in Somalia

Brussels: The European Union has committed £63 million to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Somalia, driven by conflict, displacement, drought, and rising food prices.

According to Cyprus News Agency, this funding aims to support the most vulnerable communities in Somalia, where approximately 6.5 million people face hunger, and 1.85 million children under five are at risk of acute malnutrition. The EU's financial aid will be channeled towards integrated health and nutrition services, emergency cash assistance, and other critical support through reliable humanitarian partners in a timely and effective manner.

In response to the food crisis, the EU is actively participating in the Global Leadership Roundtable following Somalia's activation of its 'Food Security Crisis Preparedness Plan.' This new funding is part of the EU's continued humanitarian efforts in Somalia, which have amounted to over £750 million since 2017. Despite global aid cuts impacting humanitarian programs, the EU reaffirms its commitment to providing emergency relief to Somalia's most affected populations.
