Nicosia: Deputy Shipping Minister, Marina Hadjimanoli, emphasized the vital contribution of shipping to the Cypriot economy during an interview with "Phileleftheros" newspaper. She highlighted that the shipping sector significantly bolsters the economy, contributing over 7% to Cyprus's GDP.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Kostas Koumis, in a separate interview with "Politis" newspaper, stressed the need for Cyprus to invest in elevating the quality characteristics of its tourism industry. Hadjimanoli mentioned that a strategic plan is in place to upgrade services and promote the strengths of the Cypriot ship registry and the broader shipping complex. She noted a 21% growth in the Cypriot ship registry since September 2023, with ship management contributing over 5.5% to the GDP.

Hadjimanoli also pointed out Cyprus' improved ranking in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council elections, moving from 12th in 2023 to 7th in 2025. Regarding the upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, she noted that efforts would focus on promoting the Nicosia Declaration. This initiative aims to enhance maritime education, increase female participation in the industry, and modernize certifications, with an adoption target by all EU Member States by April 2026.

The Deputy Minister reported a 30% rise in cruise ship arrivals in 2025 compared to the previous year, with Limassol port receiving 139 calls, including 26 home porting itineraries. Koumis, meanwhile, emphasized the importance of promoting authenticity in tourism, particularly in mountainous and inland areas of Cyprus, aiming to transform the country into a sustainable, year-round destination offering high-quality services.

Koumis highlighted that controls in the tourism sector are in place with stricter criteria than in other countries, ensuring businesses operate within a specific framework. Additionally, he revealed that market reactions are closely monitored using electronic tools. On promoting local gastronomy, Koumis advocated for the distribution of tourism to inland areas, fostering economic benefits for local communities.
