Lagonisi: Europe must rise to the occasion and confront populism that dismantles institutions and decades-old achievements, President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou, said on Tuesday during a panel discussion at the Economist conference.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Demetriou emphasized that the current era is marked by uncertainty, with values, democracy, and international law constantly being tested. She asserted that the future of the European Union is being shaped in South-Eastern Europe. “Europe is at a crucial crossroads,” she noted, highlighting challenges such as the war in Ukraine and pressures on democracy and energy security that necessitate clear leadership and unity.
Demetriou argued that South-East Europe is integral to the continent’s stability, peace, and energy strategy, labeling it as a catalyst rather than a periphery. She urged for the strengthening of reforms, democracy, cooperation, and integration among countries sharing European values.
Expressing full support for Ukraine and its European aspirations, Demetriou underscored the importance of maintaining consistency in upholding international law from Kiev to Nicosia. She advocated for energy autonomy and the promotion of the Great Sea Interconnector, emphasizing investments in interconnection and energy independence.
Concluding her remarks, Demetriou stated, “Cyprus, at the centre of these geopolitical developments, remains a staunch defender of European principles. Now is the time for a Europe that is bolder, more cohesive, and fairer.”
