Athens: Athens has welcomed the adoption of resolution 2815 by the UN Security Council, which renewed the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for 12 more months.

According to Cyprus News Agency, a press release issued by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the resolution from the Security Council confirms its strong support for UNFICYP, which has been crucial in de-escalating tensions and maintaining peace and security. The resolution also underscores support for the United Nations Secretary-General's efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, as outlined in the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.

Additionally, Greece, as an elected member of the Security Council for the two-year term 2025-2026, has actively participated in intensive consultations on the renewal of UNFICYP's mandate alongside the Republic of Cyprus, despite attempts to alter the resolution's content. The Greek Foreign Ministry emphasized that resolving the Cyprus issue remains a top priority for Greek foreign policy and reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to a fair and sustainable solution within the framework of the UN Security Council resolutions.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution has yet to be achieved. The latest negotiations, held in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, ended without a conclusive agreement.
