Cyprus Vows to Pursue Consensus on 20th Sanctions Package Against Russia

Brussels: The Cyprus Presidency is committed to working with the European Commission and Member States to reach a consensus on the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, announced Constantinos Kombos, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, during a doorstep statement before the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Kombos emphasized the significance of the discussions, particularly focusing on Ukraine as the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion nears. He described the ongoing aggression as a shocking event for the continent and commended the resilience and sacrifices of the Ukrainian people. Kombos stated that the EU has played a substantial role and should further involve itself in the negotiation process.

Highlighting Cyprus's own history with invasion and occupation, Kombos expressed full support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty. He urged the EU to reaffirm its unwavering support for Ukraine. He described the 20th sanctions package as ambitious and innovative but acknowledged the current lack of consensus. Kombos pledged continued efforts from the Cyprus Presidency, in collaboration with the Commission and member states, to achieve agreement on the sanctions.

In response to a question about the participation of Bulgarian former UN diplomat Nikolai Mladenov at the Foreign Affairs Council, Kombos noted regular engagement with Mladenov, who represents the Board of Peace. He emphasized the importance of EU involvement in dialogue, suggesting that Cyprus has been actively contributing ideas to address regional and global security issues.

Kombos remained cautious about publicly discussing the potential mandate for an EU representative to engage in direct talks with Russia, noting differing views among Foreign Ministers. He stressed the importance of private discussions before public debates and underscored the need for caution and unity in supporting Ukraine and the negotiation process.
