Nicosia: Both the invitation and the participation of Cyprus in the upcoming meeting of the Board of Peace are particularly important, said the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, speaking to journalists after the solemn celebration of Saint Maron, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace, in Nicosia.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides responded to questions regarding the invitation received and accepted by the Republic of Cyprus to participate in the Board of Peace for Gaza under observer status. He emphasized the significance of both the invitation and Cyprus's presence, expressing joy that the US has extended this opportunity. The President noted that Cyprus's involvement would underscore the country's relevant plan concerning Gaza, a plan he had previously presented in Egypt related to the implementation of aspects of the American President's plan.
As the European Union member state in the region, Cyprus maintains contact with several Mediterranean EU leaders, making its invitation and presence crucial. President Christodoulides stressed that decisions are made with Cyprus's interests in mind, which he believes the participation in the Board of Peace serves.
Either he or the Minister of Foreign Affairs will attend the meeting, with a decision expected soon. The President also mentioned that Italy and other states have responded positively to participation, though he refrained from announcing other countries' decisions officially.
President Christodoulides explained that the observer status focuses on two issues: strengthening efforts for Gaza and addressing provisions of the US President's Board of Peace. He noted Cyprus's absence from the Davos meeting, attributed to specific evaluations concerning the United Nations.
The President emphasized the US's interest in cooperation, particularly regarding the implementation of the US President's plan for Gaza. Highlighting Cyprus's proximity and interest in the region, he recalled Cyprus's initiative following terrorist attacks in October 2023, providing humanitarian aid to Gaza's civilian population through the Amalthea initiative.
In conclusion, he asserted Cyprus's role and obligation to contribute to the plan's implementation, hoping it will lead to peace in the region.
