Larnaca: We will continue to strengthen the upgraded role of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) in the region, particularly in the provision of humanitarian services, as part of the ongoing efforts to find solutions to the ongoing and multi-layered crises in the region, said President Nikos Christodoulides, addressing an event celebrating the 30th anniversary of JRCC in Larnaca.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus can be proud of having one of the most modern search and rescue centres in Europe and beyond, a sentiment echoed by the President of the Republic. He emphasized the importance of the JRCC in a region plagued by unrest and conflict, leading to humanitarian crises that affect Europe and its neighboring countries due to irregular migration flows.
The President highlighted the significant investments made by the EU in upgrading the JRCC through various European programs. He recalled recent meetings with key EU figures, underscoring Cyprus’s strategic role within the security architecture of the Eastern Mediterranean and its contribution to international security policies.
The JRCC’s operational readiness was praised, particularly its efforts in commercial shipping and civil aviation accidents. The effectiveness of the Search and Rescue System is based on immediate response readiness, appropriate resources, and highly trained personnel. The President congratulated the Centre’s Commander and officers for their recognized efforts in regional crises and international operations.
Minister of Defence Vasilis Palmas commended the staff for establishing Cyprus as a strategic hub for search and rescue services and humanitarian crisis management in the Eastern Mediterranean. Over the past 30 years, Cyprus has invested in developing a capable Search and Rescue System, often cited as a model by international bodies.
Palmas emphasized Cyprus’s role as a pillar of security in the region, with the JRCC playing a crucial role in regional cooperation and humanitarian assistance. The Centre has successfully managed over 1,200 search and rescue incidents, establishing itself as a leading hub for such operations.
Commander Andreas Charalambides noted the continuous development and modernization of the JRCC, leading to the rescue of 8,041 lives since 1995. He assured the continued commitment of the JRCC to its mission, contributing to Cyprus’s efforts to maintain stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
To commemorate the Centre’s 30th anniversary, President Christodoulides unveiled a plaque in the courtyard of the main building, marking three decades of dedicated service.
