Brussels: Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, presented key priorities for Cyprus as it prepares to assume the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This announcement was made at the General Affairs Council, where Raouna emphasized the importance of predictable support and funding for Ukraine ahead of the EU Summit scheduled for December 18-19 in Brussels.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Raouna highlighted the necessity of ensuring predictability in support and financing for Ukraine, stressing that any peace agreement must adhere to the UN Charter and uphold Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. She expressed gratitude to the Danish Presidency for their diligent work and recognized the achievements of her Danish colleague, Marie, at the General Affairs Council.
Raouna reiterated that Ukraine will be a central focus at the upcoming European Council discussions, noting the importance of addressing Ukraine's financing needs. She welcomed ongoing peace efforts and transatlantic cooperation, acknowledging the critical role of US engagement in the dialogue on Ukraine.
The Deputy Minister underscored the need to address the issue of sanctions circumvention, a concern frequently raised by Cyprus and other member states. She reiterated that Ukraine will remain a top priority during the Cyprus Presidency, with continued support across various fronts, including accession negotiations and peace deals.
Regarding the Middle East, Raouna emphasized the importance of keeping the situation on the leaders' agenda due to its volatility. She also addressed the new Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), noting the Danish Presidency's progress and Cyprus' commitment to further developing a mature negotiating box.
Raouna outlined the Cyprus Presidency's priorities, which will be fully announced by President Christodoulides on December 21. The focus will be on the MFF, the simplification agenda, enlargement, rule of law and democracy, and EU-UK relations. Additionally, efforts will be made to combat racism, xenophobia, and antisemitism.
She condemned a recent attack on the Jewish community in Australia, emphasizing the importance of standing against such acts, especially during significant cultural celebrations like Hanukkah.
In response to a question from CNA about the EU-Mercosur agreement, Raouna highlighted the significance of trade agreements in enhancing the EU's autonomy and competitiveness. She acknowledged the challenges and varying positions among member states regarding the agreement, stressing the need for a horizontal approach to address all concerns.
Raouna concluded by expressing Cyprus' readiness to proactively address unresolved issues regarding the EU-Mercosur agreement if necessary, ensuring a pragmatic and result-oriented approach.
