Paphos: Cyprus will not become a base for military operations, Minister of Defence Vasilis Palmas stressed on Sunday, noting that this is “clear and unambiguous. Our partners and friends are well aware of this”. He added that Cyprus limits its activities to humanitarian and peacekeeping operations.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Palmas made these remarks at a memorial event in Anarita village, Paphos district, honoring volunteer soldiers from Anarita who served in World War II. He acknowledged that the ongoing security crisis is causing concern among citizens of the Republic of Cyprus and beyond.
Palmas reiterated that Cyprus is a democratic and peaceful nation committed to humanitarian and peacekeeping efforts, assisting in evacuations and helping nationals of third countries and European states return home.
He expressed concerns over the increasing involvement of various players in the ongoing conflict, underscoring the importance of Cyprus remaining uninvolved and focusing solely on its humanitarian and peacekeeping commitments.
When questioned about requests from third countries, Palmas indicated that daily issues arise, primarily related to facilitating third-country citizens, and that Cyprus responds effectively. He also mentioned that Cyprus addresses requests for support within the peacekeeping framework, emphasizing that security issues remain a priority.
Palmas reaffirmed Cyprus’s stance against becoming a military base, a message he insists is well understood by international partners. Regarding a recent arrest linked to espionage and terrorism, he declined to comment, assuring that Cyprus remains vigilant and committed to citizen safety.
