Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, and his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi underlined on Tuesday in a telephone conversation the need for de-escalation in the region, according to a written statement by the Government Spokesman, Konstantinos Letymbiotis.
President Christodoulides had a telephone conversation with the Egyptian President on Tuesday afternoon, the Spokesman said.
During their conversation, he notes, ‘the two leaders extensively discussed regional developments and shared their common concern for a wider and uncontrolled escalation of tensions and conflict, which may have serious regional implications’. ‘They underlined the need for de-escalation of the crisis and discussed the efforts being made in this direction, including Egypt’s efforts with other partners’, he adds.
In this context, the Spokesperson said, President Christodoulides briefed President Sisi about the MED9 Summit, of the nine Mediterranean EU member states, that will take place in Paphos on October 11, in whic
h the King of Jordan will also participate, ‘and which will also deal with regional developments.’
‘The two Presidents also confirmed the excellent long-standing relations between the two countries and underlined their commitment to further strengthening Cyprus-Egypt bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in a number of areas such as economy and energy’, the statement added.
‘Reference was also made to the tripartite cooperation mechanism with Greece as a means to promote regional cooperation’, it said.
President Christodoulides and President Sisi agreed to remain in close contact and constant communication, the statement concludes.
Cyprus, which holds the MED9 presidency for 2024, is to host a MED9 high-level summit next week in Paphos.
