Cyprus Presidency of EU Council Deemed a National Mission by President Christodoulides

Nicosia: Cyprus presidency of the Council of the European Union is a national mission, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides has said, while stressing that this is the right moment to work towards a more autonomous European Union.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Christodoulides emphasized during a dinner with journalists that Cyprus's accession to the EU is the most significant event in the country's history since 1960. He outlined the unique aspects and objectives of Cyprus's six-month EU Presidency, noting that it is a national priority and has been in preparation for two years with the involvement of the entire Council of Ministers.

Christodoulides pointed out that Cyprus's small size is advantageous, allowing the country to focus more on the European agenda and act as an honest broker. He also highlighted Cyprus's strategic location near the Middle East, which he considers a major advantage in bridging European and Middle Eastern interests.

He further mentioned that Cyprus's experience as the only EU member state under foreign occupation provides a unique perspective on issues like the situation in Ukraine, which is a priority for the presidency. He affirmed Cyprus's European and Western orientation in foreign policy.

Christodoulides remarked on Cyprus's transition from being perceived as a 'single-issue' member state to a more diversified role within the EU. He also noted his unique position as the first Cypriot president elected without the backing of the two major political parties.

Discussing economic developments, Christodoulides expressed pride in the country's economic growth, low unemployment, and reduced public debt. He noted Cyprus's improvement in international credit ratings and significant reductions in migration issues.

He concluded by advocating for deeper integration within the EU, asserting that now is the opportune moment for such advancements.
