Cyprus Prepares to Assume EU Presidency, Aims for European Autonomy

Nicosia: The Republic of Cyprus is gearing up to take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on January 1, 2026. President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized the country's readiness during a visit to the Filoxenia Conference Center in Nicosia, which will host many of the Presidency's events and activities.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides highlighted the significance of a successful Presidency, stating it would send a strong signal for both Cyprus and the European Union. He noted that the goal is European autonomy and a European Union open to the world. He expressed gratitude to those who contributed to the organizational preparations, including the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, and various ministries.

The President assured that Cyprus is ready for this national mission, focusing on achieving results during the six-month term. He pointed out the critical nature of the timing, with key issues like the Multiannual Financial Framework and the situation in Ukraine on the agenda. Cyprus aims to support Ukraine and address defense, security, competitiveness, migration, and other vital issues affecting European citizens.

Addressing concerns about Cyprus' differences with Turkey, President Christodoulides affirmed Cyprus' capability to manage its institutional role, expecting Turkey to act accordingly. He mentioned ongoing coordination for an informal EU Summit and possible initiatives related to Ukraine, highlighting Cyprus' proactive stance.

Furthermore, the President discussed strengthening EU relations with the Middle East and potential meetings with regional leaders. He also addressed the possibility of inviting Pope Leo XIV during the Presidency, noting that any such initiatives would be in cooperation with EU leadership.

Marilena Raouna announced that the official opening ceremony of the Cyprus Presidency will take place on January 7 at the Cyprus Theatre Organisation premises, aiming to showcase Cyprus' cultural heritage and its role as a bridge between the region and the EU.
