Nicosia: Police and other competent state services in Cyprus are on constant alert to deal with possible terrorist threats, particularly following developments in the Middle East, Police spokesperson Vyron Vyronos told CNA.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Vyronos highlighted the importance of exchanging information and cooperation with foreign security services, which aids the authorities in identifying individuals who may be planning terrorist acts. Currently, four persons are in custody in Cyprus as part of an ongoing investigation into terrorism-related offences. Vyronos refrained from commenting on reports concerning the arrest of a 37-year-old suspect in Greece, believed to be linked to the case.
He emphasized that the Republic of Cyprus maintains close collaboration with EU member states, other countries, and international organizations such as Europol and Interpol, to prevent and address terrorist threats. Responding to inquiries about the arrest of the 37-year-old suspect in Crete and reports that Greek authorities acted on information from Cyprus, Vyronos confirmed cooperation with Greek authorities and other services but did not divulge further details.
Vyronos also affirmed the readiness of Cyprus Police and other services, which have been on constant alert, especially after the outbreak of the war in the Middle East. He stated that international cooperation and information exchange are ongoing to ensure timely identification of potential threats. While he could not provide additional information due to national security concerns, Vyronos assured citizens that the authorities are vigilant in identifying any threat.
When asked about the role of the Directorate for Combating Organised Crime, often referred to as the 'Cyprus FBI', Vyronos stated that although the Directorate has not been established yet, the services forming it continue to work towards combating terrorist threats and will persist in these efforts once it is operational.
Vyronos reiterated that Cypriot authorities have direct and comprehensive cooperation with EU countries and others, both bilaterally and through organizations like Interpol and Europol, to address terrorist threats effectively.
