Cyprus Parliament Unanimously Condemns Human Rights Abuses in Iran

Cyprus: Cyprus' House of Representatives expressed a firm and unequivocal condemnation of Iran's theocratic regime over serious and systematic human rights violations, approving a resolution that denounces the violent suppression of protests, executions, and the use of the death penalty.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the resolution, which was adopted unanimously by the House plenary, condemns executions, hangings, and the death penalty imposed on political dissidents, protesters, women, and members of minorities, stressing that such practices constitute a flagrant violation of the right to life.

At the same time, support is expressed for the unconditional release of all individuals detained solely for exercising their right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, while the Iranian authorities are called upon to fully comply with their international obligations arising from the United Nations Charter and international human rights conventions.

Emphasis is placed on supporting European Union initiatives for the imposition of targeted restrictive measures against individuals and entities responsible for human rights violations in Iran, as well as on calling on the EU to include the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on its list of terrorist organisations.

Parliament also declares its support for the efforts of the United Nations to investigate, document and ensure accountability for crimes committed by the Iranian regime, underlining that only the people of Iran have the right to determine their future, free from violence, repression, and external coercion.

Through the resolution, the Cypriot Parliament finally expresses its solidarity with the Iranian people and with all those who peacefully struggle for democracy, freedom, equality, and respect for human dignity.
