Cyprus: Cyprus marked the April 1 anniversary of the 1955-1959 anti-colonial EOKA struggle with nationwide commemorations, as state officials, clergy, and citizens gathered at churches and memorial sites across the island. Solemn church services were held, followed by wreath-laying and tribute ceremonies to those who fought and died during the campaign against British rule, reaffirming the historical significance of the day.
According to Cyprus News Agency, in Nicosia, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, attended the official doxology at the Cathedral of Apostle Barnabas, along with the country's political leadership, clergy, and citizens. The doxology was officiated by the Archbishop of Cyprus, Georgios. Among those present were the President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou, Minister of Defence Vasilis Palmas, Minister of Labour Marinos Moushouttas, the Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus, Konstantinos Kollias, as well as party leaders and representatives.
Afterwards, the President laid a wreath at the graves of Greek Cypriots hung by the British during the anti-colonial struggle, where Archbishop Georgios conducted a memorial service. Commemorations were also held in Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, and Paralimni.
In a post on X, President Christodoulides emphasized the importance of educating future generations about EOKA and the sacrifices made for a better Cyprus, stating that understanding one's true history is crucial. He asserted that this historical awareness supports rather than opposes efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, emphasizing that a sustainable solution depends on respecting each side's historical identity.
