Cyprus, Greece, and Jordan Elevate Trilateral Cooperation Following Amman Summit

Amman: The trilateral cooperation among Cyprus, Greece, and Jordan is acquiring an upgraded political importance, while confirming that the three countries share the common goal of creating conditions that will lead to lasting peace, security, and stability in the region, the Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, said in a written statement on Wednesday, following a Trilateral Summit in Amman.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Trilateral Summit concluded with the adoption of a Joint Declaration reaffirming the principles and priorities set during the meeting. Letymbiotis emphasized that the Summit occurred amidst geopolitical realignments in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, impacting regional security, energy, migration, sea routes, economic resilience, and overall regional stability.

At this critical juncture, the trilateral cooperation involving Cyprus, Greece, and Jordan is gaining enhanced political significance. It underscores the necessity of deepening multilateralism, fostering stable trust-based relations, and ensuring continuous coordination and cooperation among nations that share a mutual understanding of security, peace, and international legitimacy.

During the meeting, an assessment of the existing trilateral cooperation was conducted, and discussions were held on ways to further deepen it to achieve more tangible outcomes. There was a notable emphasis on the relationships between the European Union and Jordan, following a recent Informal Summit of the European Council hosted in Cyprus, with the participation of regional leaders, including Jordan.

Letymbiotis also highlighted that Cyprus, as the closest EU member state to Jordan and the region, will continue to strengthen cooperation with Jordan at bilateral, trilateral, and European levels. The Republic of Cyprus consistently supports the enhancement of EU-Jordan relations and the effective use of the EU-Jordan Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership.

The leaders exchanged views on current regional developments, focusing on Iran, Gaza, the West Bank, Jerusalem, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq. They emphasized the need for de-escalation, preventing the further spread of crises, and creating conditions for lasting peace and stability in the region and beyond.

In the context of the meeting, the importance of civil protection and regional preparedness was highlighted. The Cyprus Regional Aerial Firefighting Station (CRAFS) was mentioned as a tangible example of cooperation with real regional value, originating from a joint Cyprus-Jordanian initiative discussed at the highest political level during the first bilateral visit of the President of the Republic to Jordan in August 2023. Subsequently, a joint letter was sent by the Foreign Ministers of the two countries to the EU.

Letymbiotis noted that the prospect of enhancing strategic connectivity in the region, including IMEC, was discussed, along with promoting the idea of incorporating this issue into the context of trilateral cooperation. The three countries form a natural geopolitical and geographical axis that links the Middle East with Europe through the Eastern Mediterranean, offering significant benefits for the implementation and strategic integration of the corridor.

The Summit confirmed that Cyprus, Greece, and Jordan share the common goal of creating conditions for lasting peace, security, and stability in the region and beyond. It also affirmed that trilateral cooperation can serve as an axis of understanding, European interconnection, and practical action at a time when the region requires enhanced credibility, preparedness, and cooperation.
