Larnaka: Cyprus and Germany’s Foreign Ministers have expressed a pressing need for de-escalation in the Middle East, urging an immediate end to military actions by Israel and Iran. This consensus was reached during a meeting held on Monday at Larnaka’s old airport.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the discussions between Cyprus’ Constantinos Kombos and Germany’s Johann Wadephul also highlighted the European Union’s potential role in resolving the conflict. The German Foreign Minister expressed gratitude for the exchange of views, emphasizing the importance of the European voice in these matters. Wadephul praised Kombos’ initiative for convening an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council as a vital and timely step.
The German Minister underscored the importance of transitioning from military actions to negotiations, urging both sides to cease hostilities at the earliest opportunity. Wadephul’s visit to Cyprus was part of a regional tour aimed at fostering dialogue.
Kombos highlighted the constructive nature of their discussions, focusing on the urgent need for de-escalation due to the increasing danger posed by the ongoing situation. He reiterated Cyprus’ active request for the Foreign Affairs Council’s involvement, emphasizing the EU’s crucial role.
The Cypriot Foreign Minister also elaborated on crisis management strategies, including potential evacuations of European citizens from the region. He noted the activation of the ESTIA scheme, which has facilitated the arrival and accommodation of 2,600 people from the region in Cyprus. Requests for assistance have been received from Slovakia and Portugal, with ongoing procedures to support these countries.
While no official request from Germany has been made to evacuate its citizens, Kombos assured that efforts are underway to support Cypriot citizens stranded in Israel and Iran. Despite the challenging circumstances, he expressed optimism about finding a solution to assist them through alternative routes.
Looking ahead to the informal Council of Foreign Ministers, Kombos stressed the need for the EU’s involvement in diplomatic efforts and highlighted the importance of addressing the situation in Gaza. He also mentioned the upcoming discussions on combating fake news, underscoring the EU’s mechanisms for tackling such issues.
