Nicosia: Cyprus Foreign Affairs Minister Constantinos Kombos has maintained communication with his US and EU counterparts, Marco Rubio and Kaja Kallas, to discuss international developments and share perspectives. The Cyprus EU Council Presidency's slogan, "an autonomous EU, open to the world," underscores the nation's approach during its tenure.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Kombos and Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, briefed journalists visiting from Brussels about the priorities and objectives of the Cypriot EU Presidency. They emphasized the geopolitical challenges facing the Union, including Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, the situation in Gaza, and recent developments in Iran and Venezuela. Kombos highlighted that Cyprus's geographical proximity to these conflicts, coupled with its historical experiences, informs its active role in the EU's external policy.
Kombos underscored the necessity of dialogue with the United States, advocating for a pragmatic approach that recognizes the evolving global landscape. He emphasized that while the EU should aim for increased autonomy, this should not come at the cost of its strong existing relationships. Free trade negotiations with India and the UAE were cited as opportunities for EU economic expansion.
On the Ukraine issue, Kombos reaffirmed that Cyprus remains committed to supporting Ukraine, maintaining regular contact with Ukrainian leadership. He assured that Cyprus's efforts align with previous EU Presidencies' policies concerning Ukraine.
The Minister also elaborated on Cyprus's strategic relations with Middle Eastern countries, citing successful initiatives like the humanitarian response to the Gaza crisis. He detailed the ongoing efforts to deliver aid to Gaza, facilitated by agreements with Israel and supported by a coalition of countries.
Regarding regional security, Kombos expressed concern over developments in the Red Sea and Iran, noting the implications for maritime security and the need for coordinated international responses. He highlighted Cyprus's active role in addressing these issues through diplomacy and collaboration with international partners.
Kombos reiterated Cyprus's commitment to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations like Greenland and Somaliland, aligning its positions with broader EU policies.
In conclusion, he emphasized that Ukraine remains the EU's foremost priority, highlighting positive assessments from Ukrainian leadership on recent negotiations. He expressed optimism for strengthening ties with influential global players, including India and Gulf countries, while continuing to value the partnership with the United States.
