Cyprus Engages in UN Geospatial Information Meeting in New York

New york: The Republic of Cyprus has participated in the Meeting of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM).

According to Cyprus News Agency, the 15th Session was held in New York from 6 to 8 August and is held annually at the UN Headquarters in New York. Andreas Hatziraftis, President of the Permanent Committee for the Standardization of Geographical Names of Cyprus and Chief Lands Officer, represented the Republic of Cyprus through the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Cyprus in New York.

“The Republic of Cyprus has made significant progress in the processing, use, and distribution of geospatial data and actively participates in the work of the Committee,” the press release notes.

The press release states that the Committee of Experts is the leading intergovernmental mechanism in the United Nations for making joint decisions and setting directions for strengthening nationally integrated geospatial information management and its resources and capabilities within national, regional, and global policy frameworks and relevant development programs.

The UN-GGIM Summit, it adds, is a leading global event, from which important information and experiences are drawn.

Hatziraftis emphasizes the importance for Cyprus to continue its active participation with all the ensuing advantages, political, technical, economic, and social.
