Cyprus Engages in Global Crackdown on Illegal Pharmaceuticals

Nicosia: The Republic of Cyprus has once again demonstrated its commitment to combating the illegal trade of counterfeit pharmaceuticals by participating in Operation PANGEA for the 14th consecutive year. This international enforcement action was held from December 16, 2024, to May 16, 2025, with the collaboration of 90 INTERPOL Member States. The operation aimed to identify and seize counterfeit pharmaceutical products distributed via the internet.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Operation PANGEA is co-organized by INTERPOL, EUROPOL, the World Customs Organization (WCO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and other entities. This year’s operation resulted in 1,728 searches conducted globally, leading to the seizure of illicit pharmaceuticals valued at over 65 million US dollars. Furthermore, 13,000 illegal websites, links, and channels were identified and deleted. The coordinated effort led to the arrest of 769 suspects and the dismantling of 123 criminal organizations, marking the most significant seizures and arrests in the operation’s 17-year history.

In Cyprus, the operation was executed by the Police, in cooperation with several national entities including the Pharmaceutical Services, Customs Department, Cyprus Post, Health Services, Veterinary Services, Authority for Medical Devices, Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, and the State General Laboratory. The joint effort involved 14 coordinated operations across various locations and checkpoints at entry points into the Republic of Cyprus.

Authorities in Cyprus seized over 7,950 products subject to various national legislative prohibitions and restrictions. Among the confiscated items were pharmaceutical preparations, stimulants, antidepressants, anabolic substances, and tobacco products.
