Cyprus Aims to Strengthen Diving Tourism with Infrastructure Enhancements

Limassol: A study conducted by the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) outlines infrastructure and regulatory improvements, environmental sustainability, and the promotion of diving tourism in Cyprus. The study was commissioned by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, which seeks to establish diving tourism as a key component of Cyprus’ tourism industry.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the study was unveiled on Monday in Limassol, where the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Kostas Koumis, emphasized the potential growth of diving tourism in the region, as highlighted by the CMMI study. In remarks delivered by Neophytos Papadopoulos, the new Permanent Secretary of the Deputy Ministry, Koumis noted that the technical study will initiate a series of preparatory actions to position Cyprus as a leading diving tourism destination in the Mediterranean.

Koumis pointed out that the study provides scientific insights, empirical data, and a clear overview of the sector’s development potential. He emphasized that the Deputy Ministry of Tourism is committed to establishing Cyprus as a competitive and sustainable destination, with a focus on developing special-interest tourism categories that are increasingly popular among global travelers.

Kostas Koumis reported that global diving tourism revenues reached 9.6 billion dollars in 2024, with forecasts for 2025 predicting an increase to 11.2 billion dollars. He added that growth rates are expected to reach 5.2% in the coming years, potentially doubling diving tourism’s market share from 3% to 6% of total tourism revenue.

Koumis also mentioned that the Deputy Ministry, in collaboration with CMMI, has initiated the three-dimensional digital mapping of 43 diving sites. This initiative aims to offer visitors visual previews of various locations before selecting a destination. Additionally, investments are being made in infrastructure and projects to enhance diving sites through a dedicated grant scheme.

He further explained that targeted promotional efforts are underway to market Cyprus as a premier diving tourism destination internationally. These efforts include participation in specialized exhibitions, hosting industry professionals from key markets, and promoting Cyprus as a year-round destination with globally recognized and unique diving sites.
