Aalborg: Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment, Maria Panayiotou, has emphasized the significance of the Informal Council of Environment Ministers of the European Union, held on July 10 and 11 in Aalborg, Denmark. She described the meeting as “important and special” in her statements prior to the event.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Panayiotou outlined two primary reasons for the meeting’s importance. First, the timing of the Council before the Cyprus EU Presidency offers a strategic opportunity to engage in bilateral discussions with her counterparts from Denmark and Ireland. These discussions are essential for setting the stage for Cyprus’s upcoming role in the EU Presidency.
The second reason highlighted by Panayiotou is the Council’s agenda, which focuses on Europe’s approach to COP30. The discussions aim to define the collective stance of all Member States, the ambition of their goals, and how Europe can sustain its leadership in the green transition. Additionally, the agenda includes coordination efforts for the forthcoming Council meeting in September, where climate targets for 2040 will be a central topic.
Panayiotou stressed the importance of achieving a general consensus on the 2040 targets in September, noting that the Informal Council plays a crucial role in fostering better coordination and preparation to ensure positive outcomes.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the Cypriot Minister engaged in a series of bilateral meetings in preparation for the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026. She met with Danish Minister of the Environment, Magnus Heunicke, and Danish Minister of Climate Policy, Lars Aagaard M¸ller, to discuss critical environmental and climate policy issues. Additionally, she is set to meet with the Irish Minister of State responsible for Climate Action, as part of the dialogue with successive Presidencies to maintain continuity and strategic direction in European environmental priorities.
