Limassol: The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence at the Cyprus University of Technology announced on Tuesday that its Managing Director, Prof. Diofantos Hadjimitsis, has been ranked among the top 0.5% of scientists worldwide, according to the most recent 2024 ScholarGPS rankings.
According to Cyprus News Agency, this prestigious recognition highlights Prof. Hadjimitsis’ significant scientific contributions in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Remote Sensing, Satellite Imagery, and Cultural Heritage, reinforcing the Centre’s position as a hub of academic excellence.
The ScholarGPS platform provides a comprehensive quantitative ranking of scientists and research institutions globally, covering over 14 scientific fields, 177 disciplines, and more than 350,000 specialties. This ranking is based on publication counts, citation metrics, and h-index values, offering a unique perspective on scholarly excellence across both lifetime achievements and recent performance.
Professor Hadjimitsis achieved leading global positions, ranking 1,676 in Civil and Environmental Engineering, 27 in Cultural Heritage, and 39 in both Archaeological Site and Satellite Imagery. He is also placed 231st in Remote Sensing, with his recent work over the last five years gaining international attention, including 72nd place in Cultural Heritage and 257th in Remote Sensing.
In addition to his role at the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, Professor Hadjimitsis serves as a full Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics at the Cyprus University of Technology. He is also the Vice President of the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA), Coordinator of the EXCELSIOR H2020 Teaming Project, and co-coordinator of NASA’s MEDRIN network, focusing on space research in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Under his leadership, the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence has been instrumental in transforming Cyprus into a regional space and innovation hub. Since its establishment in 2020 in Limassol, the Centre has employed over 100 researchers and has contributed expertise in Earth Observation, Space Technology, and Geoinformation. Its work supports sustainable development and environmental monitoring through advanced data analysis, remote sensing, and cutting-edge geospatial applications.
The recognition of Prof. Hadjimitsis by ScholarGPS underscores both his exceptional personal achievements and the significant impact of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence on science, education, and innovation in Cyprus.
