Nicosia: Cyprus' Civil Defence Force has taken all necessary measures and activated its procedures following information received from the National Guard and the Administration of the British Bases through the Foreign Ministry, Civil Defence Commander Maria Papa said on Monday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Papa spoke alongside Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou at the Interior Ministry, detailing the actions taken after being informed by the National Guard about the drone strike in the Akrotiri area of the British Bases, which caused minor damage in the early hours of March 2. The Civil Defence was notified half an hour after midnight and promptly began activating its forces.
Teams were dispatched to the Akrotiri area, engaging with local authorities and communicating with the British Bases through the Foreign Ministry. Although the initial information suggested no immediate danger to residents, Civil Defence acted preventively, informing local authorities and citizens about the option to relocate to the Limassol Reception and Accommodation Centre as a precaution.
The Civil Defence mechanism ensured that the centre was prepared to host any citizens who chose to move, while teams remained in Akrotiri to provide assistance if needed. In collaboration with the Cyprus Red Cross, arrangements were made to transport individuals with disabilities and vulnerable groups facing mobility issues.
Responding to inquiries about shelter availability, Papa stated that there are approximately 2,500 shelters nationwide, covering around 40% to 45% of the population. Citizens can access information about the nearest shelter through the 'SafeCY' mobile application or by contacting the Civil Defence Crisis Management Centre.
In the absence of nearby shelters, Papa advised remaining indoors in a solidly constructed building or, if outdoors, taking cover on the ground or in a trench. Public warnings, if required, would be issued through sirens, media, or other communication channels.
Interior Minister Ioannou highlighted efforts to increase shelter coverage from 30% to 45% over the past two years, acknowledging challenges in securing private spaces for shelter use. Simulation exercises conducted last March are set to continue as part of Civil Defence Month to improve public preparedness.
Ioannou also announced an upcoming order to allow apartment buildings to create additional underground shelter space, offering planning incentives to encourage private sector participation.
