Paris: 'Chypre au Faubourg Saint-Honor©' exhibition opened in Paris, in the framework of the Cultural Programme of the Cyprus EU Presidency with the aim to present the culture of Cyprus through contemporary artistic creation, memory and history, and enhance the dialogue with the European and international art scene.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the sculptures of Cypriot artist Theodoulos Gregoriou are featured in Maurice-Barr¨s Square, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, until July 27, the Culture Deputy Ministry says in a press release. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Deputy Ministry of Culture, the Embassy of Cyprus in France and the Committee of Faubourg Saint-Honor©.
An official announcement states that the exhibition was inaugurated on 28 April, in the presence of the Ambassador of Cyprus Pavlos Kombos, in front of the church Notre Dame de l'Assomption de Paris, where the works of the Cypriot artist are displayed in an open space. The exhibition examines the relationship between memory, time and image through the contemporary artistic practice of Theodoulos Grigoriou, and aims to highlight the dialogue between art, science and technology, by proposing a poetic approach of contemporary creation.
The artist's work themed 'Memoires Numeriques - M©taplasis', combines the material and the digital element creating a visual intervention where the past, the present and the future coexist. Utilizing new technologies of three-dimensional printing and printing on cement, the artist reinterprets archaeological objects and cultural symbols, transforming them into modern bodies of collective memory. Through robotics and 3D prints, the forms are transformed creating new aesthetic conceptual and structural perspectives. Project implementation processes function as layers of time that meet in the present, linking history with matter and the current technological innovation.
The production method is transformed into an artistic experience where the machine leaves an imprint of time while the matter and the human thought co-create new images, psychic vibrations and narratives. The exhibition is located in the Faubourg Saint-Honor© region, which is an important centre of economic, political and artistic activity of the French capital, offering a dynamic environment for the exchange of ideas and a meeting point of the international art scene.
This exhibition is the third and final part of a trilogy, which delineates the historical course of Cyprus and its culture. From antiquity, as highlighted in the 'Chypre au Louvre' exhibition, to its medieval world through the 'Chypre la BnF' exhibition and contemporary Cypriot art, this narrative attempts to form a line where the past, the present and the future meet, revealing the living memory and the constant transformation of the island's identity.
