Nicosia: Cardiovascular diseases continue to be the leading cause of death in Cyprus, Minister of Health Neophytos Charalambides stated during a conference on Cardiovascular Health in Nicosia. The event was co-organized by the School of Medicine of the European University Cyprus, the Cyprus Atherosclerosis Society, and the Office of the Citizens' Commissioner.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Minister Charalambides noted that while cardiovascular diseases previously accounted for approximately 40% of deaths in Cyprus, this figure has now decreased to 24%. Furthermore, the Minister mentioned the EU's "Safe Hearts Plan," a recently announced initiative aimed at enhancing cooperative efforts in the prevention, early diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. He expressed Cyprus' support for this EU initiative, aligning the country's actions with the Plan's implementation.
The Health Minister outlined that Cyprus' National Strategy for the Management of Cardiovascular Diseases is centered on establishing a comprehensive framework for prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and research. He concluded by applauding the conference's organizers, speakers, and contributors, noting that the event was held under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.
