Brussels: Bulgaria will officially adopt the euro as its currency starting 1 January 2026, marking a significant development for the nation and the European Union. This change follows extensive preparation by Bulgaria to meet the necessary requirements for euro adoption.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the shift to the euro is expected to offer tangible benefits for Bulgarian citizens and businesses, including easier travel and living abroad, enhanced market transparency and competitiveness, and facilitated trade. The euro banknotes and coins will symbolize the opportunities and freedoms afforded by EU membership.
The European Commission has supported Bulgaria throughout the process. With this addition, 21 EU Member States and over 357 million citizens will share the euro. Public support remains strong, with majorities of EU citizens recognizing the euro's benefits for the EU and their countries, as per the latest Eurobarometer.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated, "Bulgaria joins the euro area, one of the European Union's greatest achievements. This milestone reflects years of hard work and commitment, overcoming challenges. The euro will bring benefits for the Bulgarian people making payments and travel easier. It will bring new opportunities for Bulgarian businesses, allowing them to seize better the advantages of our common single market. It will further strengthen Bulgaria's voice in Europe. This step is good for Bulgaria, and it strengthens Europe as a whole."
Starting in 2026, the euro will replace the lev, with a conversion rate of 1.95583 lev per euro. The currencies will coexist for one month, with change given in euros to gradually phase out the lev. Dual price displays in lev and euro, initiated on 8 August 2025, will continue until 8 August 2026 to protect consumers from unjustified price hikes. The Consumer Protection Commission will monitor prices of essential goods, ensuring transparency.
Banks, supplied with euro cash by the Bulgarian National Bank, will distribute euro banknotes and coins to businesses. Lev currency can be exchanged at the National Bank, commercial banks, and rural post offices. Exchanges will be free for the first six months at banks and post offices.
From January 2026, 96% of Bulgarian ATMs will dispense euros, with full transition expected within two weeks. The move follows the 2025 Convergence Report's affirmation that Bulgaria meets euro adoption criteria, supported by the European Central Bank. EU Finance Ministers endorsed Bulgaria's euro entry in July 2025.
Bulgaria's national changeover plan emphasizes consumer protection, with dual pricing, price monitoring, and oversight of traders. Comprehensive communication campaigns have complemented preparations.
The transition represents a historic moment for Bulgaria, the euro area, and the EU, strengthening unity and demonstrating the EU's resilience and competitiveness globally.
