April Rainfall in Cyprus Hits 57% of Monthly Average as Showers Persist

Nicosia: With the rainfall recorded on the first day of April and during the early morning hours of the second, the average rainfall in Cyprus has reached 57% of the monthly average. Specifically, by 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, the average rainfall in Cyprus reached 16.9 mm, while the normal average for April is 29.9 mm. According to Cyprus News Agency, the Department of Meteorology states that conditions of increased rainfall are expected to continue until April 14. Furthermore, the average rainfall from October 1 until today has reached 104% of normal, standing at 485.3 mm. The Department of Meteorology highlights that, based on an updated medium-term climate forecast by the Climate Watch Advisory Group of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the signal for above-normal rainfall in the eastern Mediterranean region, including Cyprus, is expected to persist until April 14, 2026. For Cyprus, these conditions may lead to continued increased soil moisture and surface runoff, as well as a temporary im provement in hydrological conditions. Intense or prolonged rainfall cannot be ruled out, which may cause isolated problems in vulnerable areas. According to the Department of Meteorology, the probability of above-normal rainfall in Cyprus in the immediate period ahead is estimated between 70% and 90%. Regarding total rainfall during the week of March 24 to March 30, it is noted that Cyprus falls within the range of 10-25 mm, having received 20 mm more rainfall than expected for this period. The Department of Meteorology notes, however, that despite these relatively favorable developments, the overall hydrological situation remains under pressure, as water reserves are still at low levels following a prolonged period of drought. Therefore, it emphasizes that prudent water use remains necessary.
