She emphasized AJC's long-standing advocacy for the peaceful reunification of Cyprus, highlighting the need for a sovereign state free from foreign occupation and intervention.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Rayman underscored the importance of the Cyprus issue while asserting that the island's legacy now extends beyond its historical challenges. She elaborated on the development of a strategic framework in the Eastern Mediterranean, which is reshaping discussions on regional issues. The Eastern Mediterranean Security and Energy Partnership Act was described as a significant shift, with the forthcoming Eastern Mediterranean Energy Center marking a notable milestone in the region.
Rayman highlighted the routine nature of joint military exercises among the '3+1' countries and the ongoing strategic consultations and expanding economic cooperation. She also acknowledged Greece and Cyprus for their unwavering support of Israel following the events of October 7, 2023. She praised Cyprus' humanitarian corridor to Gaza as a demonstration of how security and compassion can coexist, emphasizing the role of responsible leadership and practical cooperation in achieving peace.
In her closing remarks, Rayman expressed gratitude to the Hellenic community for its consistent support of American Jews and Israel, even in challenging circumstances. She reaffirmed the Jewish community's commitment to standing with Cyprus until a resolution to the Cyprus question is achieved.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution has remained elusive, with the latest negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana failing to produce a conclusive agreement.
