Nicosia: A two-day visit by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, to the Netherlands from June 25-27 has marked an important step towards enhancing bilateral cooperation in rural development and innovation. The visit, according to a Ministry announcement, focused on strengthening ties in agriculture and agricultural nutrition between the two nations.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the visit was a part of the broader agenda to expand cooperation following the visit of the Royal Couple of the Netherlands to Cyprus. This initiative aims to facilitate knowledge transfer and the exchange of best practices, which will aid preparations for Cyprus’ EU Presidency in the first term of 2026.
As part of the visit, Panayiotou met with the Dutch Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Safety and Nature, Femke Marije Wiersma. The Cyprus delegation visited several pioneering agri-food units and facilities known for innovative agricultural techniques, such as hydroponic systems and vertical crops. They also toured a potato seed genetic improvement center, the “Farm of the Future,” and a modern cattle breeding unit, as stated in the announcement.
In pursuit of enhanced cooperation, it was agreed to increase exchanges between farmers and stakeholders, and to engage in joint actions that promote innovation and sustainable rural development.
