Copenhagen: Cyprus Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou will participate in the informal meeting of the Environment Ministers of the EU in Denmark from July 10-11.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus’ participation holds particular significance as the country is set to assume the EU Presidency in the first half of 2026. This will form part of the Trio of the rotating presidency alongside Poland and Denmark.
Cyprus will manage the environment portfolio, playing a key role in shaping future European environmental and climate policy. Minister Panayiotou is expected to hold bilateral meetings with her counterparts to coordinate and prepare for the upcoming Cyprus Presidency. This meeting marks the first ministerial gathering in the environmental sector under the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The EU Ministers will engage in discussions ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), scheduled for November in Brazil. They will also assess progress in implementing the 8th Environment Action Programme and achieving the EU’s 2030 environmental goals. The meeting will address the strengthening of European climate policy towards 2040, in light of an anticipated proposal by the European Commission to revise the European Climate Law.
Additionally, the meeting will concentrate on the EU’s preparation for critical negotiations in Geneva in August concerning the Global Treaty against Plastic Pollution. The aim is to establish a cohesive and ambitious European strategic stance. On the sidelines, the Ministers will visit an environmental restoration area that has successfully integrated sustainable agricultural practices.
