Number of investment funds in Cyprus up for sixth quarter in Q3, assets decline

The number of investment funds registered in Cyprus rose for a sixth consecutive quarter in the end of September 2022, while their assets declined by 5.48% compared with June 2022, figures released by the Central Bank of Cyprus show.

According to the CBC, the number of the reporting entities rose to 284 in the third quarter of 2022 from 274 in the previous quarter.

Total assets declined to €8.23 billion in the end of the third quarter, from €8.7 billion in the previous quarter, while total assets marked a reduction of 3.61% compared with the respective period of last year.

Deposits and loans rose to €856.5 million in Q3 2022 from €837 million in the previous quarter, while securities and bonds declined to €799 million from €831 million in the Q2.

Total shares and other equity amounted to €6.06 billion in Q3 from €6.5 billion in the previous quarter, whereas non-financial assets, including fixed assets, rose to €316 million in end-September from €301 in the end of June 2022, the CBC said.

As far as investment funds’ liabilities are concerned, loans declined to €536 million in Q3 2022, from €617 million in the previous quarter, while shares dropped to €7.48 billion from €7.82 billion in the previous quarter. Other liabilities also declined to €208 million in end-September from €264 million in the end of June.

Cyprus-China bilateral trade more than doubles in 2022 while several investments in the energy sector are in progress

China is ready to work with other countries to jointly create an even better future for the world, said Liu Yantao, the country’s Ambassador to Cyprus. Bilateral trade between China and Cyprus in the first nine months of 2022 is worth 651 mln euros and has more than doubled compared to last year, said speakers at a press conference, on Friday, at the Embassy of China in Cyprus. They also pointed to ongoing investment projects in the area of energy.

The press conference was held on the occasion of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. Addressing the event, Ambassador Liu said that his country stood at the forefront of anti-COVID international cooperation, and worked for the building of a “global community of health for all.”

“We will strive to peak CO2 emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, so as to make greater contribution to global climate response” he added.

He also referred to the 20th National Congress of the CPC, held in Beijing from the 16th to the 22nd October, adding that its most important political outcome was the election of the new central leadership with General Secretary Xi Jinping at its core. The Congress also discussed and adopted the CPC’s Revised Constitution, the Ambassador said.

General Secretary Xi “has rallied and led all the Chinese people to open up a new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics” he noted.

Addressing the same event Deputy Chief of Mission and Political Counselor of the Embassy of China in Cyprus Wang Sheng, said that China upholds the concept of building a “community of shared future” in its relations with Cyprus.

“China and Cyprus have a lot in common. Adherence to the one China and one Cyprus policy is a clear consensus of our governments and societies. Development is our common goal. Defending multilateralism and the international system with the UN at its core is our common pursuit” he noted, among others.

Commercial Counselor Li Yaohui said that China encourages companies to invest in Cyprus. He also noted that works for an LNG terminal at Vassiliko, involving a Chinese company, are progressing smoothly.

Moreover, he referred to another company in the electricity sector investing in a power plant in Cyprus, also in the area of Vassilikos, while the project, expected to start next year, is estimated at around 78 mln euros in total.

More discussions are ongoing for solar and wind power generation in two projects in Nicosia and Limassol, Li said.

Total trade between the two countries is worth around 1 bln dollars annually, while in the first nine months of 2022 bilateral trade reached 651 mln euros, marking an increase of 54.9% compared to last year, he added.

Vice President of Prometheus Research Institute and former European University Cyprus Rector Kostas Gouliamos also addressed the event, along with Nikos Ioannou, members of the Political Bureau of AKEL. University of Nicosia in top 176-200 universities worldwide in education

The University of Nicosia is among the top 176–200 universities in the world, in the field of education, says a press release issued by the University.

It is noted that the results of the annual Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2023 strengthen the position of the University of Nicosia internationally, since it is ranked among the 176-200 best universities worldwide in the field of education.

By analogy, the ranking places the University of Nicosia as the 1st university in Cyprus and Greece (together with the University of Cyprus), and 40th in the European Union, in the specific field.

Commenting on the results of the ranking, the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Professor Elena Papanastasiou, expressed her great satisfaction with these results, stating that “these rankings objectively highlight our value locally and internationally as they reflect the quality of our work.”

?his ranking, the press release says, is the last in a series of distinctions for the University of Nicosia from the Times Higher Education organisation, with its ranking among the 501-600 best universities worldwide in the World University Rankings 2023.

Cyprus reports 8 deaths and 3,736 new COVID cases between 11-17 November, positivity rate at 5.28%

Cyprus Health Ministry announced on Friday that between 11 – 17 November 8 deaths were reported due to COVID 19 and 3,736 new cases were detected. The positivity rate is at 5.28%.

The deceased are 6 women and 2 men aged from 71 to 96 years old. One passed away August 2021 but the death was reported only recently. Total deaths since the pandemic broke out reached 1,218 and total cases climbed to 610,023.

Moreover the Ministry said that 70 patients are receiving treatment in public hospitals and 10 are in a serious condition.

A total of 70,769 tests were carried out, 2,215 of which were PCR and 209 cases were detected (Positivity rate PR 9.44%). The number of Rapid Tests were 68,554 and 3,527 came back positive (PR 5.14%).

On private initiative a total of 1,780 PCR tests were carried out and 138 cases were detected (PR 7.75%). The number of rapid tests were 45,170, of which 3,248 were positive (PR 7.9%).

Via the Ministry’s programme a total of 23,384 rapid tests were conducted and 279 cases were detected while at testing points 153 cases were reported from a total of 13,984 tests (PR 1.09%).

In elementary schools 223 tests were done and 1 case was detected (PR 0.45%) while in high schools no cases were reported from a total of 33 tests.

In the army no cases were detected out of 25 tests carried out, while in nursing homes 81 cases were detected from 4,902 tests (PR 1.65%) and in closed units 44 cases were found from 4,217 tests. (PR 1.04%).

Cyprus MP meets with Portuguese delegation visiting the island

Chair of Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Trade, Industry and Tourism Kyriakos Hadjiyianni met Friday with a Portuguese delegation, comprising the Member of the Committee on Environment and Energy of the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal Nelson Brito and the Mayor of the Portuguese city of Aljustrel, Carlos Teles.

The visit is in the framework of the activities of the European Network URBACT “Volunteer Cities+”, in which Aljustrel and the town of Athienou, in Cyprus, participate. Athienou mayor attended the meeting.

They all expressed the common will for parliamentary cooperation in issues related to the use of renewable energy sources, EU’s energy autonomy and inflation, especially in the energy sector.

Hadjiyiannis briefed his guests on the Cyprus issue and Turkey’s provocations and thanked Portugal for its stance based on principles.

Brito expressed his country’s solidarity with Cyprus and reaffirmed that Portugal supports efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, on the basis of international law.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

Weaknesses, prospects and initiatives for the Religious Tourism in Cyprus, discussed in convention at the CUT

A convention for the promotion of Religious Tourism in Cyprus, was organized this week at the Cyprus University of Technology.

Participants at the meeting underlined the need for better coordination between actors associated with Religious Tourism, for thorough information about religious monuments and for the use of technology.

Representatives of the Church of Cyprus, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Savvas Perdios, and academics spoke at the convention and they all underlined the importance of Religious Tourism as an alternative that could provide means for tackling seasonal limitations of the industry. The Bishop of Mesaoria spoke of the initiatives on behalf of the Church, such as publications and events that aim to reinforce the industry and referred to an event in Poland about religious customs in Cyprus, which produced an increase of 300% in arrivals from Poland.

The open discussion during the convention highlighted the access restrictions in monasteries and churches as a major weakness for the Religious Tourism and interested parties promised to look into it carefully.

Some concerns were expressed about the loss of the Russian market, after the war in Ukraine, but the representatives of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism reassured the attendees that the alternative markets made up for it.

Children’s House received referrals for sexual abuse investigation for 1,565 children the last five years

From the day of its operation in September 2017 until October 2022 Children’s House received referrals for 1,565 children to be investigated for sexual abuse, Hope For Children Organization said on Friday in a press release on the occasion of today’s European Day for the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Abuse.

In 2017-2018 when the House operated only in Nicosia, 136 children were referred, while in 2019 when it began operating island-wide it handled 294 cases. In 2020 324 cases, in 2021 481 and until October 2022 referrals were received for 330 children.

According to data from the 2022 statistical analysis, in terms of gender, 23.3% were boys and 76.7% were girls, which is also consistent with the 2021 data.

The average age of the children was 12 years and the most common age was 14. Up to 60% of the victims have Cypriot nationality, followed by other nationalities, in much smaller percentages.

Regarding the form of sexual abuse found figures show that 49.7% (164 children) involved sexual abuse with physical contact, 23.3% (77 children) involved sexual abuse without physical contact, while 20.3% (67 children) related to another type of sexual abuse such as exposure or exploitation (eg photos or videos on the internet).

The numbers, the press release says, agree with both international and European surveys as well as data obtained from equivalent structures.

If a case is referred to the House, children receive immediate support until the case is heard in Court.

The Children’s House, the press release adds, has managed to bring together professionals from completely different specialties who are able to speak in a common voice in support of the children.

“Hope For Children” supports and promotes the Council of Europe’s campaign “Getting it right: ensuring child-friendly justice through Barnahus structures in Europe” which invites member states to focus their attention on standards structure Barnahus (“House of the Child” in Icelandic).

Children’s House was assigned to Hope for Children by the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare.

It provides services such as the judicial interview, medical examinations, psychological and social support, treatment and rehabilitation. In the House area, professionals from the Cyprus Police, the Social Welfare Services, the Mental Health Services, the Educational Psychology Service and the Medical Services collaborate and cooperate.

ActInSpace, the European Space Agency’s space start-up competition, begins in Nicosia

ActInSpace the European Space Agency’s (ESA) space start-up competition began on Friday in Nicosia, at Discovery Alpha, the Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation’s (CSEO) home for research and innovation.

Winners will be announced on Saturday and will represent Cyprus in the international competition in France.

ActInSpace is a competition offering members of the public the opportunity to develop solutions to challenges in space exploration into start-ups.

Participants can work either as individuals or in teams and will have 24 hours to dream up new, viable solutions for Europe’s future space exploration, research and technologies.

The winning teams will represent Cyprus at the ActInSpace semi-finals in Cannes, where they will also have the opportunity to form their own start-up companies, get access to funding and even discover career opportunities in space.

The international winning team will have the opportunity to experience a zero-gravity flight.

MP Efstathiou on PACE working visit to Baku

Cyprus Parliamentarian Kostis Efstathiou is travelling to Baku, Azerbaijan on Sunday for a working visit in his capacity as the Rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on execution of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

A press release by the Parliament says that Efstathiou will collect information for the preparation of a report, which will include an assessment of Azerbaijan’s compliance with ECHR decisions, which mainly concern politically motivated cases and the abuse of power, in violation of Article 18 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Cyprus MP will hold meetings with the members of the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court of the country, the Attorney General, the Commissioner of Administration, representatives of the Ministry of Justice and the President of the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee. He will also have meetings with representatives of non-governmental organizations and lawyers.

interior Minister takes part in Conference on combating terrorism financing in New Delhi

Cyprus’ Interior Minister Nicos Nouris takes part at a two-day work of the 3rd International Ministerial Conference on Combating the Financing of Terrorism, in New Delhi, with the participation of more than 70 countries and world institutions.

An Interior Ministry press release says that during Friday’s intervention the Minister informed participants about the measures taken by the Republic of Cyprus to strengthen and implement the framework for control and combating the financing of terrorist acts.

He also referred to the measures and mechanisms adopted and which have been repeatedly evaluated positively by the MONEYVAL Committee of the Council of Europe.

Additionally he made special reference to the illegal trafficking and trade of cultural goods, as a source of funding for terrorism, describing it as a serious blow to the efforts to protect the world’s cultural heritage.

Nouris also underlined the importance of implementing instruments, such as the Nicosia Convention on Offenses Concerning Cultural Property, which was adopted during the Cypriot presidency of the Council of Europe in 2017 and plays a key role in preventing the destruction and illegal trade of cultural property , worldwide.
