Nicosia: Wind production and the availability of a production unit in Dhekelia have successfully met recent electricity needs, according to Harry Zavallis, Assistant Director of Operations of the Transmission System Operator Cyprus (TSOC), who spoke to CNA. The recent drop in temperature and subsequent decrease in electricity demand have allowed the current infrastructure to cover the needs without issues.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Zavallis explained that the data from the past three days indicates that electricity demand is at normal levels for the summer season. He assured that the current needs are being adequately covered. However, Zavallis cautioned that if temperatures rise excessively again, there might be a need for electricity cuts. He emphasized that post-August 15th, temperatures generally do not escalate to levels that significantly increase demand, except in rare instances of a September heat wave.
Zavallis further noted that if high temperatures coincide with people returning from holidays, electricity supply problems could resurface, depending on the availability of production units. He mentioned that maintenance would be necessary for the units after the summer’s heavy usage, as continuous operation is not feasible.
He also provided insights into expected demand levels, estimating around 910 megawatts, which can be comfortably met with conventional production reaching 1030 megawatts, supplemented by wind production of approximately 50-70 megawatts. Zavallis concluded by emphasizing that the electricity situation is monitored daily due to potential failures and unforeseen circumstances.
