Larnaca: Executive director of the United Nations Office for Project Services, UNOPS, Jorge Moreira da Silva emphasized the significance of Cyprus’ recent dispatch of a humanitarian aid consignment to Gaza, describing it as “a crucial step in alleviating the suffering.”
According to Cyprus News Agency, da Silva shared on “X” that a ship carrying 1,200 tons of aid has departed Cyprus under the UNOPS-managed UN 2720 Mechanism, as part of the Amalthea Plan. He stressed the need for a rapid, unhindered, and safe flow of humanitarian aid for all civilians in need, highlighting the critical nature of the aid dispatch.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the aid shipment left the port of Limassol on Monday evening. The consignment, organized under the Amalthea plan initiative, includes 1,200 tons of humanitarian aid. Of this, 700 tons originate from Cyprus through the CyprusAid mechanism of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The remaining 500 tons are donations from the Government of Malta and various international humanitarian organizations based in the United States, Italy, the Sovereign Order of Malta, and Kuwait. The Foreign Ministry also noted the instrumental contribution of the Government of the United Arab Emirates to the effort.
