President Christodoulides Calls for Respect of Ukraine’s Territorial Integrity

Nicosia: President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides took part Tuesday in three video conferences regarding the meeting European leaders had Monday with US President on Ukraine.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the President stressed during the video calls the need for full respect of Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, underlining Cyprus’ historical experience of living under illegal Turkish occupation for 51 years, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said in a written statement.

Letymbiotis noted that during the video conferences of the European People’s Party, the Alliance of the Willing, as a follow-up to last Sunday’s videoconference, and the meeting of the EU leaders convened by European Council President, Antonio Costa, participants were given a detailed briefing on the meeting between the President of Ukraine and the President of the United States on Monday, followed by a substantive exchange of views among the leaders.

According to Letymbiotis, in his intervention, President Christodoulides highlighted the critical importance of the issue of the occupied Ukrainian territories, stressing that any solution should be based on full respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. He further noted that Cyprus’ own historical experience, with 37% of its territory remaining under illegal Turkish occupation for 51 years, clearly demonstrates the need to defend these principles without concessions or exceptions.

At the same time, he assured that the Republic of Cyprus will continue to stand consistently by Ukraine and its people, supporting their just struggle for freedom, independence, and the restoration of their territorial integrity.

Finally, he stressed that Cyprus, as an EU member state experiencing the consequences of occupation, closely links its own experience with the European struggle against all policies of occupation and revisionism, which undermine peace, security, and international order.
