President to Receive UN Envoy Holguin for Cyprus Talks on September 2

Nicosia: President Nikos Christodoulides is set to meet with the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, on September 2, as confirmed by Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis in a statement to CNA on Tuesday.

According to Cyprus News Agency, arrangements are in progress for President Christodoulides to host Holguin for discussions on the morning of September 2. Holguin’s visit to Cyprus is tentatively scheduled between September 1 and 6, although these dates have not been officially confirmed.

The island of Cyprus has faced division since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern region. Efforts to resolve the conflict through UN-led peace talks have stalled, primarily due to Turkish resistance. The most recent negotiations, held in July 2017 at Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended without resolution.

In more recent developments, an informal meeting regarding Cyprus was conducted in New York on July 16-17, 2025, following a similar gathering in Geneva earlier in March. Another meeting is expected later this year to advance initiatives agreed upon by the parties. UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres highlighted these meetings as a demonstration of commitment to ongoing dialogue. Guterres also plans to meet with both Cyprus leaders during the UN General Assembly high-level week in September.

Discussions between the two sides in Cyprus continue, focusing on unresolved matters such as the opening of crossing points and a solar energy project in the buffer zone. There is also an agreement to collaborate on various issues, including the exchange of cultural artifacts. Maria Angela Holgun will persist in her diplomatic efforts as the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus.

The European Commission has appointed Johannes Hahn, a former European Commissioner, as Special Envoy for Cyprus to aid the settlement process, working closely with Holgun.
