Process on Cyprus Issue Continues as President Expresses Hope for Resumption of Talks

Nicosia: The process concerning the Cyprus issue remains active, as President Nikos Christodoulides declared his optimism for the resumption of talks. Speaking at a ceremony in Strovolos, where Argyroupoleos Avenue was renamed to Dimitris Christofias Avenue, the President emphasized that the ongoing efforts have not been halted.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides addressed questions regarding the schedule delay of Maria Angela Holguin, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy. He assured that the process is not frozen and continues with full momentum. The President outlined that Holguin’s upcoming visit to Brussels on July 13, coinciding with the NATO Summit, signifies that all processes are progressing, aiming for an expanded conference to announce the resumption of talks.

President Christodoulides highlighted the critical nature of the current juncture, with efforts being made at various levels, including in Cyprus, New York, and the EU. The goal remains to achieve a positive outcome. The President credited the initiation of this mobility to their efforts and the EU’s active involvement, particularly following the April 2024 Conclusions and the appointment of a personal envoy.

The President reiterated the strategic goal of linking developments in Euro-Turkish relations with the Cyprus issue, as Turkey views progress on these matters as crucial. He expressed hope for a favorable outcome, highlighting the desire for talks to resume.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 due to Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Previous UN-led peace talks have been unsuccessful, largely due to Turkish intransigence. The last significant negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana ended without resolution. After informal meetings in 2025 and a subsequent hiatus, deliberations are ongoing for a broader format meeting as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ term nears its conclusion. Mara Angela Holgun, Guterres’ Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is actively engaging with the involved parties.
