President inaugurates facilities in CUT in Limassol of more than 5 million euros

President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiades inaugurated on Friday the laboratories of the Department of Fine Arts, new classrooms and the administration offices of the Cyprus University of Technology in Limassol.

In his speech, the President said that the government has shown and will continue to have great interest in the education sector and in the further upgrading of the University, adding that the overall budget of the projects has exceeded the amount of 5 million euros.

He expressed the belief that these projects will contribute to increasing the quality of the education provided and to improving the administrative services of the University.

President Anastasiades said that the first project provides for the creation of laboratories for the Department of Fine Arts with a total cost of 2,700,000 euro and underlined the great donation of the Leventis Foundation towards this goal.

The second project, he said, has a total budget of 3.1 million euro and will cover the renovation and reorganization of a two-story listed building, as well as the construction of a new three-story building. The renovated building, he said, mainly includes offices, while the new building includes six new classrooms.

He also referred to the great interest shown by multinational companies in Cyprus, noting that knowledge of the English language would facilitate young scientists in the labour market. He added that it is indispensable that the English language is used at the universities.

The President underlined that “without denying that it is the Greek language that contributed to science, nevertheless English is considered necessary. And there is no problem that cannot be overcome. Therefore, I appeal to the House of Representatives to move forward, so that a pending issue that has existed for years can be overcome.”

He welcomed the new Department of maritime science, saying that Cyprus ranks 3rd in ship management in Europe and 11th worldwide.

“Therefore, it is an absolutely necessary educational service that will be offered to our young people and I am sure that the new Government, whichever it is, will be by the side of education in our country”, he concluded.
