President Christodoulides to Inform Political Leaders on UNSG’s Visit to Cyprus

Nicosia: The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, will convene a meeting of political leaders ahead of the scheduled visit of the United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) to Cyprus.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the "President will convene a meeting of the political leaders before the UNSG's visit to inform them." UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to visit Cyprus from July 27 to 29, as announced by St©phane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN chief, during a press briefing at the UN headquarters in New York.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have not yet yielded results due to Turkish intransigence. The latest round of negotiations, held in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, ended without a resolution.

After informal meetings in 2025 and a hiatus of several months, deliberations are underway for a new meeting in a broader format, as the term of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres nears its end. Mara Angela Holgun, Guterres' Personal Envoy on Cyprus, has been tasked with engaging the parties. Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto acts as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, succeeding EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
