The Cyprus government is in contact with the UN to be informed about the meeting between Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and UNSG’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar on Thursday, in Ankara, Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Friday. Invited to say, during the press briefing, if the government has asked or intends to ask to be informed about the discussion held between Fidan and Holguín, the Spokesman said that “we are in contact with the UN in order to be informed. Up until now we have no information about the meeting apart from what has been made public.” Moreover, he noted that they have no official information for the time being about Holguín's meetings from now on. The UNSG’s Personal Envoy has had up to now meetings in Cyprus, Greece and Turkey. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
