More Than 80 Million Euro in EU Subsidies Unclaimed by Farmers, Says Commissioner

Nicosia: More than 80 million euro in available EU subsidies has not been collected by farmers over the past decade, as revealed by Andreas Kyprianou, the Commissioner of agricultural payments. He addressed members of the House’s Finance Committee during discussions concerning the 2025 budget, which is set at 17.3 million euro.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Kyprianou highlighted that more than 300 young farmers have successfully received subsidies and are actively participating in rural development programs. This engagement is viewed as a positive sign for the future of the primary sector. Since its inception, the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organisation has injected 2.21 billion euro into the agricultural economy through various subsidies.

Kyprianou further disclosed that in 2024, the organisation provided 119.5 million euro in subsidies to support the Cypriot agricultural sector. This funding covers various initiatives, including rural development programs and direct payments. Additionally, discussions are ongoing to explore financing options for individuals interested in farming and livestock breeding.

Members of parliament noted that the unclaimed funds, despite being approved, were not collected because applicants struggled to secure necessary funding for their contributions. They also found it promising that many young individuals are eager to pursue careers in farming.
