Kuwait Pledges Continued Support for Cyprus Settlement Efforts

Kuwait city: Kuwait's new ambassador to Cyprus, Abdullah Turki Al-Turki, has reiterated his nation's steadfast support for a comprehensive resolution to the Cyprus issue, aligning with United Nations Security Council resolutions and principles of international legitimacy.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Ambassador Al-Turki presented his credentials to the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, on Tuesday. During the ceremony, President Christodoulides emphasized the priority of strengthening relations with Kuwait and the broader Gulf region. Ambassador Al-Turki conveyed greetings from Kuwait's leadership and expressed hopes for continued prosperity for the Cypriot people.

Ambassador Al-Turki emphasized the enduring friendship and mutual respect between Kuwait and Cyprus, highlighting a future-focused mission to enhance cooperation in investment, tourism, culture, and education. He acknowledged Cyprus's significant international role, particularly during its Presidency of the European Union, and stressed the importance of high-level visits and direct contact between officials of both nations.

The Ambassador reaffirmed Kuwait's unwavering stance on the Cyprus issue, advocating for a solution that upholds the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Cyprus. He reiterated Kuwait's commitment to supporting efforts for a just settlement.

President Christodoulides acknowledged the historic ties between Cyprus and Kuwait, noting Kuwait's support following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. He highlighted shared principles of respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international law, underscoring the importance of peaceful dispute resolution.

The President also expressed Cyprus's appreciation for Kuwait's support and emphasized the potential for expanded cooperation in trade, investment, energy, tourism, and education. He advocated for stronger EU-Kuwait and EU-Gulf Cooperation Council relations, inviting Kuwait's Amir to visit Cyprus.

Cyprus remains divided since Turkey's 1974 invasion and occupation of its northern third. UN-led peace talks have yet to achieve a resolution due to ongoing challenges. As informal meetings in 2025 lead to broader discussions, Mara Angela Holgun, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' Personal Envoy on Cyprus, continues engagement efforts with involved parties.
